I have spoken before about Pittsburgh and other regions should not try to compare themselves to Silicon Valley. Well, as part of my morning reading, I found the picture above from PWC’s MoneyTree and it really screams my argument. The numbers are for Q4 and show that the entire mid-west does less then a quarter the VC funding of the valley. In software companies specifically, we have less than a fifth ($88M to $486M). Politicians that go on and on about making Pittsburgh the next silicon valley are disillusioned and trying to follow a special model that came up at a special time. It gave them a market position that no one can aspire to, much less emmulate.
