Something a little different about my morning cup of ESPN this morning… The PIRATES are on the front page for a good reason.
Let’s be honest… this kind of success is hard to relate to startups, we can look at it as a larger enterprise though. The Pirates are a bulky organization that employs hundreds of players over 5-7 teams, all with the goal of funneling talent to the major leagues. When Neal Huntington took over the team a few years back, the system was a mess at every level. The work he’s done is an amazing example of organizational rework analogous to the revamping of a large IT organization under a new CIO. It can’t happen overnight, but you can slowly put the right people in the right places with the right missions and after years of hard work the team makes a “miraculous” turn around.
