What does your company do? In most companies there are as many different answers as there are employees. Humans simply aren’t capable of all being on exactly the same page. Large companies solve, or rather try to solve, this problem by sending executives to preach the message in classrooms where more than likely neither the executive nor the attendees really want to be there. Not attending these meetings is just one reason I like working for startups.
Startups have their own problem though, they often simply don’t address this problem at all. Leaving VERY different perceptions of the purpose, goals, value proposition, etc… It’s too bad, because small companies have a unique opportunity to allow everyone to own the message. It may seem laborious, but try sitting down your entire team and rewriting the front page of your website. Everyone will feel they own the message, everyone will understand why each word is the way it is, everyone will see the ideas that others brought forward. It’s an awesome experience that leaves your team rejuvenated and focused.
