If I were starting now I would do things very differently. I didn’t know anything. In Silicon Valley, you get this feeling that you have to be out here. But it’s not the only place to be. If I were starting now, I would have stayed in Boston. [Silicon Valley] is a little short-term focused and that bothers me.
– Mark Zuckerberg (interview)
I have written in this space before that every startup community has its own upsides and downsides and that no place other than Silicon Valley could (or should) be Silicon Valley. It’s nice to here Zuckerberg make the point too though (I’ll bet he has a couple more people who listen to him).
The other thing I’ve pointed out here before is that when a startup is NOT a good fit for a particular city, that city needs to let it go without resentment or disappointment. If we’re to create a culture of ambitious young people it can not be one that feels like a self-conscious or resentful. Some people will move in and some people will move out, we just need a healthy number here at any given time.
