I’m Not Ordering an IPad – The 8 Reasons Why

I covered the reasons that I think the iPad and other such devices are the future in computing, but not the present.  In that post I discussed how HTML 5 and other technologies will allow rich internet applications to make a thin computer just as useful as a thick client.  I’m not going to rehash that here.  Here, I want to make a different point: the Ipad is purely a novelty.  I’ll give you 8 reasons why.

  1. I’m not going to carry a device that big if I STILL have to carry my computer.
  2. The Ipad will not give you a reliable way to edit word documents and visio diagrams.  To most people in IT (I’m assuming many of my readers are) this is essential.  I simply can’t leave home without a computer where I can do that.
  3. I want to see what a Chrome OS tablet looks like before I buy anything.
  4. I like keyboards and having to carry around a USB one takes away from the whole point.
  5. There are a lot of other options for tablets.
  6. If it does prove useless, I’ll have a two year ATT contract.  I hate ATT.
  7. No flash = No Hulu (and other internet video).  What am I going to do in my hotel room when I’m traveling.
  8. Apple will make it better, you know they will and you’ll wish you hadn’t bought one.

#6 – for the iPad, AT&T actually offers a pay as you go plan. $15 for 250MB, or $30 for unlimited a month.

I won't be getting one (yet) for various reasons, but thought the info might be useful.

    6. There is no AT&T contract. There will be two offerings, $15 250MB or $30/mo unlimited. Those who are happy with their WiFi iPod touch might find use for a $15 service on occasion, when going on vacation, perhaps.
    7. In your hotel room, you'll be watching video you downloaded through iTunes or converted to a format the iPad will play. I rip DVDs to play on iPod, the iPad will be no different, only bigger.

I appear to have been wrong about att contracts, though I would still have
    to do business with them.

I also don't enjoy the apple store due to there abuse of DRM. Especially
when it comes to tv shows that are publically available on the web.
